5 things to do in Kiruna
Sweden's northernmost city is not only known for Kebnekaise but also for the world's largest underground iron ore mine. With its location, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, the city is one of the best places in the north to see the magical northern lights from September to March.
1. The world's largest underground iron ore mine is a must-see attraction. The mine is part of LKAB's Visitor Centre and is located 540 meters underground. Here you can see exhibitions, films, and machines and get a unique insight into the modern mining industry.
2. Drive an hour to Abisko and the Aurora Sky Station, named by Lonely Planet as the best place in the world to see the northern lights illuminate the sky.
3. Take a trip west, about ten miles from Kiruna and 1.5 km from Björkliden, and experience the waterfall Silverfallet. The beautiful waterfall rushes down into Torneträsk and from the site, you can also see the view over Lapporten – Sweden's most depicted mountain motif.
4. Kebnekaise is all well and good, but try the Luossavaara mine mountain instead, which is also "right in town". Here you can ski both downhill and cross-country. It's hard not to be captivated by the fantastically beautiful surroundings of the mountain world.
