There are over a hundred kilometres of cross-country skiing tracks in Oulu, and a big part of them are lighted. To enjoy some openness, head for the ski tracks or skating courses on the frozen sea. While you’re out on the sea, explore the islands in the archipelago.  The adventurous can try winter cycling, kiteboarding, and you can also explore both land and sea from a snowmobile.

Skiing centre Ruskotunturi is located right next to downtown Oulu, conveniently a bus trip away. There are six skiing slopes, parks for tricks and a kids’ area. In an hour-and-a-half drive from Oulu, one can reach the southernmost fell in Finland and its skiing centre Iso-Syöte.

Winter city culture in Oulu

Winter is an excellent time to indulge in the colourful culture of Oulu. There are museums showcasing everything from cars to animals and art to geology, and there are treats for both friends of opera and stand-up comedy. The biggest events are held in Areena Oulu, Ouluhalli and the Madetoja hall.

Family fun in Oulu

There are many options for wintertime activities for families, ranging from downhill skiing to campfire trips. In the nature centre in Liminganlahti, there is a lot to see both indoors and outdoors.

In the science centre Tietomaa, there are fascinating exhibitions, 3D-movies and a gondola ride. The indoor activity park SuperPark Oulu gets the entire family moving, and the climbing centre welcomes both big and small. There are also a lot of cultural events for children.
