Alesund and Sunnmore
Alesund and Sunnmore are among the most visited tourist destinations in Norway. Here you can hike, ski and admire Alesund’s architecture and fjords. Many visitors start in the art nouveau city when they come to explore Geiranger fjord or the snow-capped mountains by Hjorundfjorden and Sunnmorsalpene mountains. Geiranger fjord is known as the most beautiful fjord in Norway. The landscape around the fjord, such as the tall waterfalls and the old mountain farms are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The beautiful and jagged mountains around Alesund offer fantastic hiking trails. The mountains rising almost 2,000 metres to the sky above the sapphire blue fjords, invite you to enjoy off-piste skiing and ski touring from February until June. If you’re more of a stairs person, you can take the 418 steps leading you up to mount Aksla and Fjellstua restaurant. Here you’ll get fantastic views over the art nouveau city and nearby islands.
The fjords, lakes and rivers are brimming with fish, so you could easily plan a fishing trip, maybe even whilst out kayaking. If you choose to let others catch the fish for you, you can still enjoy an abundance of fish and shellfish in the harbour or at one of the cosy restaurants. Alesund is the world’s largest exporter of stockfish, and at several places you can get a taste of the fish in different combinations. Since the fishing tradition is so strong in Alesund, it might not be surprising that the city has the best aquarium in Norway. The award-winning aquarium, Atlanterhavsparken, is fun for youngsters and adults alike, and gives a perfect insight into sea life in the Nordics.
If you want to drive around the area, the perfect trip is to drive from Alesund to Andalsnes and then on to Valldalen. Drive the famous and winding Trollstigen road. Continue towards Geiranger fjord, and stop to enjoy the views at Dalsnibba located 1,495 metres above sea level.
