Tromso
The polar city Tromso, also called ‘Paris of the North’, is northern Norway’s largest city, offering lots of culture and history. The city is the perfect starting point for anyone wanting to see the fantastic natural phenomenon of the northern lights (September–March). Several local businesses arrange excursions to search out the northern lights. If you’re here between May and the end of July, the midnight sun is the most spectacular attraction for most visitors.
Tromso city centre is close to seemingly untouched nature, so for outdoor enthusiasts, the city is an optimal starting point for fishing trips, biking, paddling, dog sledding and whale safaris. Lyngsalpene mountains rise 1,800 metres up from the Arctic Ocean, and challenge both beginners and experienced mountain hikers in summer and winter.
Tromso offers a lot of other activities as well, and we recommend a visit to the beautiful Arctic-Alpine Botanic Gardens, Polar Park – northern Norway’s only and the northernmost zoo in the world, the Polar museum, the mountain lift up to Storsteinen to experience the best views of Tromso, a trip to Kvaloya island and Tromso Lapland, amongst other things.
After having participated in Tromso’s activities, the Arctic food traditions make sure you get a refill of energy. Tromso is a treasure trove of fresh ingredients, and the city’s skilful chefs create delicious dishes based on local ingredients. Several of the restaurants have excellent reviews from both city locals and tourists on Tripadvisor. Among restaurants you’ll find the elegant Skirri, Emmas Under, Fiskekompamiet Sjosiden, Ra Sushi, Presis Tapas, Bardus Bistro, and last but not least Roast at Scandic Ishavshotel.
