Valdres
The rural town Fagernes is the regional centre of Valdres. The town offers several cafes, restaurants, shops and a shopping centre. Therefore, it’s possible to combine the great natural experiences of Valdres with more urban joys. There are excellent opportunities for hiking, fishing and swimming in Fagernes.
If you’re in Fagernes, you should visit Valdres open-air museum, one of the largest of its kind in Norway, with more than 100 old houses. You’ll get close to sheep, pigs, calves and hens at «Kviistunet» farm, while Munkekroen museum restaurant and the cafe offer top quality, local Valdres food. In the summer season, the local youth entertain you with folk music and dance. The museum also enjoys an idyllic location on «Storoya» island, with a 1.2 km nature trail around the island which is well worth exploring.
On warm summer days, the park and Vesleoya island are popular places to visit. Here you’ll find a playground, sand volleyball court, an idyllic esplanade and of course Strandefjorden lake, often enjoying pleasant swimming temperatures. If you get tired of lazy days in the park, you can hike to Kviteberg. Even though the hike isn’t very long (about 1.5 hours), it offers fantastic views of Fagernes, Leira and Strandefjorden. If you're looking for a more challenging hike, you can follow the Besseggen trail, one of the most popular mountain hikes in Norway. Almost 60,000 people hike Besseggen every summer. It’s easy to reach Besseggen from Fagernes and Valdres.
Many associate winter and skiing with Fagernes and Valdres. In addition to great ski trails, the area also offers several alpine skiing facilities for slalom, snowboard etc. Ski touring and randonnee are also increasingly popular, and Valdres offers a wide range of mountains for both experienced and less experienced skiers.
