Møns Klint

Møns Klint is unlike any other place in Denmark. White chalk cliffs rise up high above the blue Baltic Sea. Møns Klint is 7 kilometres long and at its highest point reaches 128 metres into the sky. A trip to Møns Klint takes you on a unique journey far back into Denmark's history - 75 million years back to be precise.

From chalk algae to tourist attraction

Roughly 75 million years ago, the area where Denmark lies today was a tropical ocean. Algae, which lived in the ocean, had skeletons of chalk shell. When the algae died, the chalk shells fell to the seabed. Over the course of millions of years, a thick layer of chalk built up on the seabed and it became the foundation of what we today call Møns Klint. The cliffs were formed during the Ice Age when the ice pushed chalk flakes together to form the high slopes of the Møns Klint.

Møns Klint is an impressive sight! Today the area is visited by hundreds of tourists every day who view in wonder and fascination the pure-white cliffs and ponder the violent forces of nature.

In addition to enjoying a nature lesson, the entire family can explore the Geocenter Møns Klint. The exhibition transports visitors, young and old, on a journey back to the Cretaceous Period and traces the development of Denmark and Møns Klint from the past to the present.
