Weekend in Gothenburg
The harbour city of Gothenburg is the perfect weekend destination. Here you’ll find all the shopping and entertainment of the big city but with all the advantages of a smaller city, with everything within a comfortable distance. Things like being able to take the tram to the archipelago…
SHOPPING AROUND AVENYN AND NORDSTAN
Avenyn (actually called Kungsportsavenyn) is an avenue offering lots of great shops, restaurants and nightclubs. Stroll down the avenue and come to the area within Vallgraven, a cosy district that you can wander around and shop.
Nordstan shopping centre offers shelter from the rain and snow with all the shops under one roof. Other great shopping streets are Kungsgatan, Magasinsgatan and Victoriapassagen.
Fresh fish at Feskekyrka fish market
Buy fresh fish and seafood here over the counter, or enjoy them deliciously cooked at the Gabriel restaurant. With its special architecture, the building is one of the major sights in Gothenburg and almost holy for those who love seafood.
Gourmet restaurant or street food?
Do you prefer Michelin star gourmet restaurants or would you rather grab something from a food truck? There are restaurants for all tastes here, although seafood is often the speciality. Gothenburg is bursting with clubs, cafés and more to discover, so what are you waiting for?
Coffee break in Haga
Follow Vasagatan street from Avenyn to discover the cobbled streets in the Haga district. Experience the famous Hagabullen bun at Café Husaren or something else from any of the cosy cafés offering homemade pastries and prawn sandwiches. If you love shopping, you’ll find many small, personal shops and second hand shops where you can browse for a bargain.
Adventures at Universeum and Liseberg
Visit Liseberg, the biggest amusement park in the Nordic region, with rides and attractions all year round for all ages. Experience rain forests, exotic animals, space and much more at the Universeum science centre.
Picnics and concerts in the city parks
The Linné district can be found on the other side of Haga, with the lush greenery of Slottsskogen park. Every year there’s the opportunity to enjoy concerts at the Way Out West music festival. Visit the penguins and seals at the zoo, or enjoy a picnic on the lawn. Café Björngårdsvillan and Villa Belparc are among the charming places to enjoy a meal or a coffee.
The Botanical Gardens are among the largest in Europe and located next to Slottsskogen park. Learn more about plants and enjoy the changing seasons here.
If you feel like taking it easy for a while after all the shopping and sightseeing, you’ll find the Trädgårdsföreningen (Garden Society of Gothenburg) oasis just a stone’s throw from Avenyn.
Enjoy art, design and opera
At the top of Avenyn is the magnificent Carl Milles statue of Poseidon. If you’re looking for more to do, visit the Gothenburg Art Museum right next door, or maybe the Rohsska Museum with design, fashion and crafts. For opera, musicals or dance enthusiasts there's the Gothenburg Opera.
Take the tram to the archipelago
Tempted to swim, go on a boat ride or dance on Branno bridge? Then why not take a day trip to Gothenburg’s southern archipelago. Enjoy the sea air all year long. Jump on a tram to Saltholmen and take the archipelago boat to Styrso, Branno, Donso or Vrango islands. Travel the entire journey on the same ticket!
