Summer in Vaasa

It is easy for a tourist to feel at home in the coastal town of Vaasa. An attractive city centre, wonderful nature and varied events ensure a good holiday.

Maritime Vaasa invites you to have an enjoyable time

A compact city centre

It is nice to spend the day in Vaasa’s compact city centre. There is a comprehensive selection of shops in the shopping centres in the city. The downtown street-level shops and Market Hall are also worth a visit. Check out the local markets and flea markets in the city’s event calendar.

If you run out of things to do in downtown Vaasa, head for the amusement park, PowerPark.

The archipelago and day tours

The Kvarken archipelago is Finland’s only nature destination on the UNESCO world heritage list. You can admire the beautiful scenery of the archipelago on a day cruise to Valassaaret or Mikkelinsaaret islands or the lighthouse islands in the area. Spend the day in comfort on a guided nature tour.

The Strömsö villa is located in Vaasa’s Västervik outdoor recreation area. Guided tours are arranged in the area, during which you can also have a look at the set of the Strömsö TV programme.

Culture and museums

See the old centre of Vaasa, almost destroyed in a fire, located about 7 km from downtown Vaasa. A short walking distance from the city centre is the Brage Open-Air Museum, where you can admire farmhouses and 19th-century Ostrobothnian furnishings.

In the Kuntsi Museum of Modern Art, you can admire contemporary art, such as Simo Kuntsi’s art collection. Visit the Meteoria Söderfjärden museum, the site of a meteor impact 520 million years ago.

Summer events

Summer events attract people to Vaasa throughout the summer. In May, there is the Vaasa Choir Festival, in July the Närpiö Tomato Carnival and the Korsholm Music Festival. In August, the Night of Arts and the 18th-century fair in Isokyrö.

During the summer Vaasa also offers several sports events, such as the European Athletics Team Championships in June and the Wasa Football Cup in July.

Only an hour’s drive away, in Seinäjoki, there are also plenty of events, such as Provinssirock, the Tango Festival, the Farmari agricultural exhibition and the Vauhtiajot (Speed Race), combining rock and motor sports.

Indulgence on a hot day

On a hot summer’s day, it is easy to head for the beach, because there are several in the vicinity of the city centre. The water park Tropiclandia on Vaskiluoto island is also nearby, with a children’s slide, two children’s pools and sunbathing areas with terraces.
